THE YWCA AGVIK

Helping women in Nunavut end the cycles of violence in their lives and their communities.

The YWCA Agvik Nunavut is a registered non-profit organization. We operate an Emergency Women’s Shelter (Qimaavik) and a Women’s Homeless Shelter (Sivummut) 24/7.

  • What is gender-based violence? Does it only include physical harm?

    Gender-based violence includes any act of violence or abuse that can result in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering. 


    Examples of types of violence and abuse include:

    • Physical violence
    • Sexual violence (including child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation)
    • Emotional and psychological violence (including threats, harassment and intimidation)
    • Online violence
    • Financial abuse
  • Where can I go if I need help or want to help someone who is experiencing gender-based violence?

    If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, and you live in Cambridge Bay, Iqaluit, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk or Rankin Inlet, please contact your local shelter:

    If there is no Shelter where you live, the RCMP or a Community Social Services Worker can help you find a safe place to go.


    In Nunavut, under the Family Abuse Intervention Act (FAIA), there are some tools that can help you if you or someone you know is experiencing violence:


    • Emergency protection order
    • Community intervention order
    • Compensation order
    • Assistance order

    There are many ways that you can get involved in helping to prevent gender-based violence in your community and across Nunavut:


    • You can get the assistance you need to address violence in your life or the life of your children
    • You can help someone you know who is experiencing violence to get the assistance they need
    • You can volunteer with a local organization
    • You can start your own local support group or project
    • You can get involved in an already existing project and initiative
    • You can share existing materials on gender-based violence, including those found on this website
    • You can attend a course or training and share that information with others
    • You can contact your MLA to share your perspective and ideas
